| The United Democratic Front government of Kerala, which will be completing one year in power within a couple of months’, will announce their Tourism Policy soon. According to AP Anil Kumar, Minister for Tourism, Government of Kerala, the draft of the new tourism policy has already been prepared and will be finalised after due consultations with industry stakeholders. Without going into details, Kumar said that the new policy aims to take foreign tourist arrival numbers to 20 lakh from the current seven lakh by 2020. |

| Travel time to North Eastern states is set to reduce considerably with Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi today proposing to connect Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh, opening up a direct link between Kolkata to Tripura capital through the neighbouring country. Trivedi said the rail link will not only "improve bilateral ties but will also help in establishing connectivity with inaccessible areas in North East," he said. |
| "Journey from Kolkata to Bangladesh will result in significant savings in time and distance travelled," he said. |
| At present, Railways run Maitree Express between Kolkata and Dhaka. |
| Trivedi said that in keeping with their approach of improving relations with neighbouring countries, Railways had in this fiscal taken up two projects connecting to Nepal. |

| On the other hand, the Minister spelt out several passenger-friendly initiatives. One such schemes includes alternative train accommodation system as a pilot project to accommodate waitlisted passengers. |
| He said escorting of trains by RPF/GRP has been extended to almost 3500 trains. |
| "It is also proposed to integrate the RPF helpline with the all India passenger helpline to facilitate much faster response to security needs of the passengers. |
| Despite the slowdown, hill stations of Himachal Pradesh attracted nearly 5 lakh foreign tourists in 2011, an increase of more than 30,000 than the previous year. The state has witnessed constant increase in foreign tourist arrivals over the past five years as from 2.07 lakh in 2007, it has touched 4.85 lakh in 2011. The state expects to attract more than 5 lakh foreign visitors this year. |
